laser safety officer:


When publicly operating a laser of class 3b or 4, a laser safety officer (LSO) has to appointed in written form to the local authorities, together with the notification of the laser product.

The laser safety officer has to give proof of the qualification.

Qualification can be gained by
Vocational training
Experience
Attending a course on laser safety

The LSO has to establish and mark the hazardous ares (industrial applications), e.g. the areas where the MEP can be exceeded. The LSO has to check the emergency stop, and other safety equipment, for correct function.


Usually the LSO is also responsible for notification of authorities, and coordinates the assessment of the laser system in coopoeration with assessment experts.
In addition the LSO has to advise the manager/organizer in various aspects. For example, in selecting the appropriate personal safety equipment, briefing of personal, and investigating accidents through laser radiation, together with the specialist for occupational safety. Also the LSO has to notify the management of any faults of the laser equipment.
